My great-grandmother
Theng
Luis Nio (I call her makco) is originally from Magelang, Central Java.
Like most of the
couples in former times, she and her husband Gan Thian Bo were matched
by their parents.
Theng Luis Nio lost
many of her close family members as young lady, but still she was very
patient and she never seemed to be angry or bitter with her life.
First, she lost her
baby daughter. Then her husband Gan Thian Bo died after a disease when
her two other sons were still little children. Afterwards, the youngest
son Gan Koen Djin died in the river during a swimming lesson.
My great-grandmother
died 1971 when I was four years old.
She died very peacefully
when she was cooking in the kitchen in their house in Purbalingga.
